What I’ve seen so far this year…
Here is a list of what I have seen so far this year (in chronological order), either in the cinema or on DVD. Keep your Netflix queues handy…
Cloverfield - Shaky cam, YouTube sensibility but if you can get past that, it has some genuine scares. Definitely a fun film.
Shrooms - Silly horror film about… wait for it… psychedelic mushrooms. Uh huh… Wish they did something more interesting or funny with the premise.
Be Kind Rewind - Or as I like to call it… Be Kind to Yourself and Skip This Film. It’s just not good.
Stop Loss - Eh. Great actors, script cops out and goes the formula route.
Leatherheads - It has its charm but Renee Zellweger is in it. I warned you.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall - The first truly great film of 2008. It’s not an example of craft or style. It is just funny and sweet and touching. Relatable story of a man trying to get over a break up hits all the right notes. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. I went twice and laughed just as much the second time.
The Ruins - I wish I could say this film is worth your time but I can’t. So I won’t.
The Fall - Another great film. Tarsem’s last film was The Cell and I was not a fan. But he spent three years making this and shot it in a ridiculous amount of countries. It is not a perfect film but so sweet and interesting. Visually stunning, traces of Pan’s Labyrinth and Princess Bride. See it on the biggest screen possible, the cinematography is breathtaking. Remarkable achievement.
Iron Man - Exactly what a summer movie should be. Fun, entertaining, RDJ kicks ass. For once a big budget super hero flick doesnt dumb itself down for the masses. Only problem: Gwyneth. Why does she think talking with a baby voice lisp is cute? Um, it’s not. Get over it.
Baby Mama - Silly fun.
27 Dresses- Just don’t.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Poorly conceived, overblown, and just plain boring. The jeep sequence was definitely cool, until Shia turns into Tarzan. WTF?? George Lucas needs help.
Semi Pro - Snooze.
Sex and the City - read previous post below.
Rogue - A giant killer croc in Australia. Definitely fun, from the director of Wolf Creek, falls apart in the end.
The Strangers - Just not scary. Don’t believe the hype.
The Happening - read previous post below.
The Incredible Hulk - read previous post below.
That’s it so far this year!!!
I’m really psyched for:
Wall-E, The Dark Knight, Tropic Thunder (check out the redband trailer, so much funnier!!), Hellboy 2, The Wackness, Pineapple Express
I’m confused by: A new X-Files movie?? What year is it?
